Christmas fun in the Australian sun
WE all know the stereotypes (老套) about Christmas. A sleigh (雪橇) pulled by reindeer carries Santa Claus, in his big red coat, between ice-covered rooftops as he delivers presents to boys and girls. Families have a warm roast dinner, and sit around a fireplace to escape the winter chill(寒冷). What would
Cristmas be like if it was in the middle of summer? Well in Australia, it is.
During Christmas in Australia, there’s no sign of snow—the temperature on Christmas day can reach 35 degrees Celsius. Instead of sweltering (闷热的) inside, many Australians will make the most of the great summer weather with a trip to the beach and a picnic lunch.
On Christmas day, parks and beaches all over Australia come alive with families eating, drinking, and catching up on the year gone by. They will eat roast meats like in England and America, but they’ll also enjoy fresh seafood, cold meats and many different types of fruit and salad. Often they will use a barbecue to grill some steak or lamb.
Fruits like cherries and mangoes (芒果) are very popular, because they are ripe during the summer.
On a typical Australian Christmas day, everyone will get up early and sit under the Christmas tree to exchange presents. Following a small breakfast, they will go to the beach or park for Christmas lunch.
After everyone has eaten, children will gather on the grass or sand and play a game called "backyard cricket (板球)". This is like regular cricket, except with slightly different rules.
Meanwhile, the adults will continue to sit, talk, and drink beer or champagne. This is their way of reminiscing (怀旧). Christmas is a special day, because it’s often the only time all year that a whole extended family can be together. In this way, Christmas in Australia is a lot like the Spring Festival.
